Photo Project - Result

Welcome to Amsterdam

More inclusive than ever

Since arriving in Amsterdam for my semester abroad, I've noticed how friendly people are here. I wanted to capture the diversity of the people and areas around Amsterdam to visually tell stories about my time here. This is an inclusive city, full of all kinds of people from around the world brought here for one reason or another. Each photo tells a story about people I've met around Amsterdam and where we were at the moment. My theme is about openness and individuality, but the project is also a reflection about myself and my attempt to make small human connections.

I use logos to convey this openness through eye contact and how close I was able to be to the subject. I use kairos to catch specific moments where I share a connection with the subjects and moments that capture parts of their character. I use natural light to maintain an authentic, spur of the moment feeling. I also use light to draw attention to the people and their faces.

This project is far from finished. I want to photograph people in other areas of the city such as Bijlmer, Noord, Oost, NDSM, and the main city center to capture a better representation of the entire city and the vast differences between the neighborhoods. I will also continue to carry my camera with me and photograph people I meet naturally along the way.
